build wardrobe on a budget - closet cleanse

Cleansing your closet is the best and worst part of the building process. Best part because it is so stress relieving to rid your closet of all the unnecessary clothing and accessories. Worst part because it is so time consuming. It took about four hours to clean my closet out because I did this thorough cleanse. So I definitely suggest dedicating a day or a half day to this.

So how do you do a closet cleanse?

How To Build A Wardrobe On A Budget, Part 1

build wardrobe on a budget

A/N: This post was originally published in 2013, but it's one of the most popular posts on my blog, so I decided to give it a facelift!

In the words of Carrie Bradshaw, "I confronted that eternal puzzle - a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear."

Boy, that has happened to me more times than I'd like to count. Sometimes I look at my closet, shut the door, then open it again hoping something will pop out at me...hasn't worked yet.

After going through this ritual over and over again, I realized that there are two major mistakes made by many of us when it comes to our closets:

We're all closet hoarders. // (Pun intended.) For some reason, we tell ourselves that we need to keep that top and those pants from our younger days. I mean, they might fit again some day! I know. I use to say the same thing. Trust me, you don't really need that top from high school that you wore to your first Sadie Hawkins. If it's sentimental to you, pull it out of your closet and tuck it in a memory box. It's hard to let go, but it's time if you want to improve your wardrobe.

We're sale impulsive buyers. // You head over to the sale rack, pick something up, and bam! It's only two dollars?! I have to buy it! We've all been sucked into this black hole. If you've ever seen a sales rack at Old Navy or Forever 21, you know what I'm talking about. You buy something that you would never buy at full price 9 times out of 10 and it ends up sitting in your closet forever.

So how do we break these horrible habits?

shonda rhimes sherry lansing award speech

Yesterday morning, I woke up and did my usual Pinterest browsing when I came across this article from Buzzfeed, "Shonda Rhimes Delivered The Most Inspiring, Badass Speech." Of course, I had to read it because 1) I am obsessed with all of her shows and 2) that was a pretty catchy headline.

Read it all the way through to the end. Let me tell you, she did give a pretty badass, inspiring speech.

8 Friends You'll Make in Your Early Twenties

eight friends from your early twenties

As my 24th birthday approaches, I'm starting to think more and more about the people in my life. I've legally been an adult now for about 6 years now - wow, that's a weird number to grasp - and it's funny the type of friends I've made throughout college and in my post-grad life.

This past week I was upset about the way a friend was acting and labeled her as the I'm Only Here If I Need You friend, which made me laugh and actually helped me get over being upset with her. Then, I just started going over all the types of friends I've made and the list below was born.

Make Haystacks // Seriously, the winter holidays are my favorite time of year because my family has so many great traditions. One of my favorite holiday treats my mom makes every year are haystacks. They're the perfect combination of crunchy, salty, and sweet. I can't wait to share her recipe with you all next week!

Shop Local // I decided that all of my Christmas presents this year would be from local stores and boutiques here in Bryan/College Station be cause I think it's important to support businesses in your community. I'm in love with these Cat Studio glasses that are at Pine Boutique right now. They're the perfect gift for a White Elephant or Secret Santa. They have a fantastic Pinterest board of gift ideas if you're still doing your holiday shopping (like me..whoops!).

free christmas printable

My favorite day out of the entire year is the day after Thanksgiving. Not because of all the phenomenal sales going on right now (ICYMI, it's Black Friday). Every year, the day after Thanksgiving has been about decorating the house for Christmas with my family. It's definitely my favorite holiday tradition and I'm thrilled that I get to decorate the ladypartment today with all the Christmas decorations I've been stocking up with over the past month.

So, instead of telling you about all of the awesome Black Friday deals, I decided to share 4 free Christmas printables with y'all. I'm so excited to hang these up in the ladypartment on my new gallery wall!

how to edit instagram caption

Something amazing happened in the latest Instagram update - you can edit your photo captions after you've already uploaded the photo.

I know this may seem like old news since the feature was released about two weeks ago, but I've noticed that a lot of people haven't realized you can edit your Instagram captions. In fact, it's so new that Instagram hasn't even updated their help section to address this new feature.

I only discovered this feature after playing around on Instagram and I died from happiness. This new feature is great for those moments when you discovered that autocorrect has failed you once again or if you decide you want to add more information.

Below is a step-by-step tutorial on how to edit Instagram captions:

you are what you do, not what you say you will do

Last week, I talked about comparing yourself to others and how focusing on the things you don't have take away from you enjoying the life you have already. I spent the week reflecting on why I compared myself to others and looking really hard at what I wanted out of life. You know, the usual. So for the month of October, I'll be focusing on improving.

Transition Your Wardrobe into Fall

transition wardrobe into fall

It's officially fall and I'm just on the edge of my seat waiting for Texas to say "Haha! Just kidding about this nice weather." Yesterday was actually the most perfect day ever. It wasn't too hot, wasn't too cold, and all you needed was a light jacket. Some might even call that the perfect date. (Bonus points if you can name that movie.)

I talk about the weather a lot lately in case y'all haven't noticed, but only because I'm concerned for southern girls everywhere. The weather is so unpredictable. One day it's in the 60s, the next day it's 100 degrees. Don't get me wrong, we love summer. We really love it. But our love for leaves changing, pumpkin spiced anything, and knee high boots just can't be beat. The best way to embrace the hot weather we're still having and enjoy all aspects of fall is to keep a flexible wardrobe.

comparison is the thief of joy theodore roosevelt

Tomorrow is the first official day of fall and Texas is not going to comply as usual. The high is in the 90s for the entire week. Womp, womp. But, I'm not going to let that keep me or my closet down. I decided to force Texas into the season and pulled all of my fall clothes to the front of my closet last week. Hopefully, the power of positive thinking will make the weather change. (Extreme emphasis on the hopefully.)

learn how to get motivated

The weather this weekend in Texas, y'all...it was phenomenal. I mean, after the rain and flooding subsided, a wonderful cold front came through and made me feel like the season could actually be changing from summer to fall early. (That never happens!) With the seasons changing, it's time for us to transition our mindsets from fun, carefree summertime to a more focused fall.

Office Pretty // Home Office Essentials Under $25

Wednesday, September 10, 2014

For my job, my office can be anywhere - a local coffee shop, a park bench, at our actual office, or at home on my couch while watching SATC. (Pretty lucky, am I right?) Lately, I've been working more from home, but I've started to put more hours in napping than work. (Whoopsy whoops. I have a comfy couch.) Long story short, I decided to make myself a home office of sorts in my living room so I can still get the benefit of watching SATC and stay awake while working.

The nerd in me immediately started looking for items to make my home office not feel like an office, but an area of inspiration. Offispo, if you will. (Not gonna lie, took me a while to figure out a nickname for office inspiration.) And as a girl who lives on a budget, it's really hard to convince me to buy things nowadays that are over $25 unless I really really need it.

letting go of control

Sometimes, I avoid things when I get overwhelmed and for the past two weeks, I've been extremely overwhelmed. I hate feeling overwhelmed because it makes me feel like I'm losing control of things in my life. It's the losing control that really sends me into avoidance because avoiding things is the only thing I feel like I can control. I retreat into my apartment and I avoid phone calls, blogging, working, cleaning, or doing whatever is overwhelming me.

After some feedback from readers, I've decided to bring back Friday Faves to share some of my favorite things I've seen or read around the web. Since these past two weeks have been dedicated to Texas A&M sorority recruitment, I wanted to share a few of my favorite sites and stores for sorority women at Texas A&M.

What To Expect: Texas A&M Sorority Recruitment

texas a&m sorority recruitment

Recruitment is the longest and one of the most amazing weeks of your college life. I've said that a millions times these past two weeks because it is completely true. Below I've created a little guide for each day of recruitment to help you be as prepared as possible for this awesome week!

Make The Most of Your Sorority Recruitment

Monday, August 18, 2014

texas a&m sorority recruitment

I cannot emphasize enough how sorority recruitment will be one of the best weeks of your college life. Some people beg to differ. You'll hear horror stories about crying and dropping out, but ignore them. I believe the people with the horror stories didn't know how to make the most out of their sorority recruitment. They went in with all the wrong expectations and completely fell apart.

texas a&m sorority recruitment

I wish I could sugarcoat the process of sorority recruitment at Texas A&M, but then I'd be lying to y'all. Don't get me wrong, this is going to be one of the most amazing weeks of your college career. You are going to meet so many outstanding women in each sorority as well as other women going through recruitment with you. However, this is Texas and you're going to be outside for a great deal of the time. Our weather and the asphalt are not going to be kind to you. You definitely need to prepare for that.

What To Wear: Texas A&M Sorority Recruitment, Part 2

Wednesday, August 13, 2014

texas a&m sorority recruitment

In my previous post, I shared outfit ideas for Go Greek Days, Philanthropy Day, and Bid Day. While I love those days, my favorite days have to be Skit Night and Pref (Preference) Night because you get to be all dressed up. Also, these last two days means recruitment is almost over and you're that much closer to finding your home! (I was Recruitment Vice President while in my chapter, so I have an unhealthy love for recruitment and home finding. It's exciting!)

Pick Me. Choose Me. Love Me.

pick me choose me love me quote

I love Grey's Anatomy, but Meredith... should we really be teaching women that saying, "Pick me. Choose me. Love me." is a good way to get someone to be in a relationship with you? I know this is fictional, McDreamy couldn't decide if he should stay with his wife Addison, and he loved both of them. I know these facts, but still.

La Bodega

Wednesday, August 6, 2014

la bodega college station

Some days I intend to be super prepared, start off my day super early and accomplish a lot. Today was one of those days and naturally, in my effort to be super early to work, I forgot my camera to add my pictures to my computer for the original (and awesome) blog post I was going to post today. I'm in between getting my Internet installed this week so I can only post my blogs when I'm at work or when I go steal wifi from Starbucks. I know y'all never would have noticed, but I just wanted to say this is a really really really good reason to have back up blog posts already ready to go. (Just a word of advice to other new bloggers.)

One of my favorite places in all of Aggieland during the summer is La Bodega. In College Station, I feel like there are two feelings about La Bodega: you either love it or hate it. Personally, I love it. I've never been dissatisfied with anything I've ordered there. A lot of people complain that their tacos aren't like baja tacos in California and not like Tex-Mex tacos you find in Texas. I don't care about those things because once you eat one, you know that even though they don't fall under either of those categories of tacos, they're still pretty damn good. Now, are they the best tacos you can get in Bryan and College Station? No. But that's another post for another time.

I was really reluctant to writing this post at first because I wanted to be selfish and keep this place to myself. It's that awesome. But I love y'all and want anyone living in or visiting Bryan/College Station to enjoy the places I love, so I gave in. You're welcome in advance. :)

Look I Love: Distressed Denim Shorts

Friday, July 25, 2014

distress denim looks
(images l to r via 1/2/3/4)

This summer has flown by so fast, but luckily for those of us in Texas, summer weather lasts until September or sometimes even October. This means we have an extra two to three months of wearing short shorts, tanks, skirts and summer dresses. God bless Texas. (I just really hate wearing pants.)

A look from this summer I love is the distressed denim short. Distressed denim makes any outfit look effortless and casual. Not to mention, they're the most comfortable shorts in the world. These shorts have been a closet staple all summer long and luckily they'll be easy to transfer into fall. Throw on a blazer or a light-weight sweater and you're good to go on those 'colder' fall nights (aka: 75 degrees in Texas. That's freezing!)

Above is a round up of some of my favorite ladies wearing the look. What do y'all think? Will you be wearing your distressed denim shorts this fall?

e.l.f. mist and set spray review

When you're a post grad, you start to have a lot more expenses than in college. It doesn't matter if you've landed a job with an amazing salary or if you work for $15/hour. You're paying for more things now and it can be overwhelming. This is why I put myself on a budget after graduation and started cutting funds in places that I use to splurge, such as in makeup.

Caffe Capri

Wednesday, July 23, 2014

One of the most talked about Italian places in Bryan/College Station is Caffe Capri. If you live here, you'll hear the Candy 95 radio station giveaway dinner for two from Caffe Capri almost every other week. (Yes, I've tried to win. #noshame) Don't ever attempt to go for dinner Thursday, Friday, or Saturday without a reservation because there's always a line out the door waiting. That's the main reason it's taken me five years to try it. It's always so busy.
